Winter Concert is TONIGHT!

Our Winter Concert is TONIGHT at Martin High School! CLICK HERE for a .pdf of the handout or see below for the text.

General Information:
·         This is a performance grade and will count twice so it is required for ALL band members in ALL classes.
·         Uniform: This is a formal event, so we will dress accordingly.
o   Symphonic Band (Boles 4th period) will wear the Boles Formal Uniform
o   All other students will wear nice dress clothes (what some families might describe as “Sunday best”). Please no jeans, shorts, t-shirts, or athletic shoes. Boys should wear khakis or dress slacks with a polo or, even better, shirt and tie. Girls may wear a dress or skirt/blouse as long as you are mindful of school dress code and how the skirt will work with your instrument.
·         There are two components to this concert: performing and being an audience member. Our behavior as an audience member is just as important as how well we perform. All students must stay for the entire concert. Grades can be lowered if students are disruptive or disrespectful during another class’s performance.
·         It is important for all students to arrive at their designated call time. Students that are late may not receive full credit for the performance.

Itinerary for Tuesday:
3:55 PM                School ends! Take home everything you need to perform (Symphonic Band, this includes vest and tie).
6:30 PM                Arrive at Martin High School back parking lot (Pleasant Ridge and Old Dominion).
STUDENTS enter at loading dock entrance.
·         All CASES will be stored in the ORCHESTRA ROOM
·         CONCERT BAND/BEGINNERS/PERCUSSION CLASS will set up on the STAGE
·         SYMPHONIC BAND will set up in the ORCHESTRA ROOM
PARENTS enter at main auditorium/gym entrance at your leisure
·         8th grade parents drop off desserts on tables in lobby (please don’t send desserts to the backstage area with your student).
6:40 PM                Begin warm-up – do not be late!
6:55 PM                Symphonic Band move to auditorium to listen to Concert Band/Beginners/Percussion Class.
7:00 PM                Concert Begins! Concert Band/Beginners/Percussion Class performs first.
7:10ish  Concert Band portion of concert ends; Concert Band files into assigned seats in the auditorium.
Symphonic Band files onto the stage.
7:15ish  Symphonic Band performance begins.
7:40ish  Concert ends. Enjoy the dessert reception in the lobby! Be sure to collect all of your belongings before
leaving Martin.

We will be taking monetary donations for Toys for Tots at the concert.

All-Region Results

Congratulations to the following FIVE Bulldog Band members that earned a spot in the All-Region Band! Our region consists of Arlington ISD, Mansfield ISD, and Birdville ISD. This is the highest achievement an individual junior high musician can earn. The All-Region bands will have their clinic and concert on Saturday, December 6th at the Willie Pigg Auditorium in Mansfield. BRAVO!

Ben F, Clarinet - 17th chair Symphonic Band (17th chair overall)
Darcy G, Clarinet - 11th chair Concert Band (29th chair overall)
Ryan F, Clarinet - Alternate (37th chair overall)

Luke B, Trumpet - 10th chair Symphonic Band (10th chair overall)
Alejandro C, Trumpet - 3rd chair Concert Band (15th chair overall)

I am so proud of all of our Boles Band members that completed the All-Region audition process. It takes guts to put yourself out there in an audition like this. We are ALL better musicians now, at the end of the process, than we were at the beginning of the process.

I will post full results from Saturday outside the band hall on Monday morning.

Warrior Trees!

The Martin Band is having their 2nd annual Warrior Trees Fundraiser! This fundraiser offers fresh trees, wreaths, and centerpieces. Orders are places directly online. Most items will be picked up at Martin High School, but two wreaths can be directly shipped to friends and family anywhere in the US! There is also an option to donate your order to a local family in need of a little cheer this season.

Mention the Boles Band during the checkout process and we will receive a percentage of the profits!

Participating in this fundraiser is not required, but if you were thinking about fresh decorations for your home this holiday season, please consider supporting the Martin and Boles Band programs as well! Items will be picked up/delivered the week after Thanksgiving.

Boles & Young Performing at Martin HS Football Game

This Friday the combined Boles and Young bands will perform at the Martin vs. Bowie game at Sam Houston HS. The Martin HS band will be at the Bands of America Super Regional in St. Louis, MO, so we will cheer for the Martin Football team while they are away!

Here is the handout/itinerary/map

I grew up attending BOA contests with my high school band (The Woodlands High School) and always found them to be a rewarding experience. They do a great job of making every band and every band feel valued and successful. Check them out: www.musicforall.org

Dean Corey Time Lapse

Jeremy Earnhart, the AISD Fine Arts Director, just sent all the band directors a link to a 90-second time lapse of the Dean Corey Marching Band Extravaganza. It's pretty neat, especially the massed band at the end. Check it out!

Junior High Band Night is RESCHEDULED

The Martin vs. Sam Houston Game will happen tonight despite classes being canceled today, however, junior high band night has been rescheduled to Friday, October 31.

We made this decision for several reasons. First of all, we did not want any students to miss out on the opportunity to perform with the high school band. We know that there are many families that would have a hard time getting their students up to school at 5:30 PM with short notice. It would not be right to exclude students because of transportation situations. Additionally, Young junior high was one of the schools affected by the power outage. Mr. Howell has not heard if he is allowed to be in their building today, and Boles  and Young need to have the same junior high band night.

Rescheduling this event will also allow for us to have the rehearsal like we had planned originally. Students will have more time to talk to their high school buddies and will have a more meaningful performance at halftime.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions. The Dean Corey Band Spectacular is on Tuesday! I hope to get a handout to you before the weekend is over.

Rehearsal @ Martin is CANCELLED

Good morning Spirit Band Family,

Due to the seemingly inevitable thunderstorms that will cross through our area this afternoon, Mr. Carbone (head band director at Martin) has cancelled tonight's combined rehearsal in the interest of everyone's safety. I am disappointed that we can't have this rehearsal tonight because it was so much fun last year, however, the safety of our students is the most important thing.

This will change the format of tomorrow's game. The timeline remains the same, but we will not be able to go on the field with the band without the rehearsal this afternoon. We will still get to meet and hang out with the high school band kids, watch the halftime show from the stands, and enjoy 3rd quarter break with the Martin Band.

For today, this means that regularly scheduled Symphonic Band trumpet and oboe sectionals will be after school in the band hall and end at our normal time of 5:05 (unless for some reason the school district cancels all after school activities -- I will let you know if this happens). Everyone else should go home after school like they normally would.

The weather for tomorrow looks GREAT, so we should be on for the game! Keep sending me emails if you plan to check your band student out with me during the third quarter of tomorrow's game. I need those emails by 9:30 tomorrow morning.

Thanks, and let me know if you have any questions!

End of Year Info

Boles Band Family,

First of all I want to congratulate all of the kids on a fantastic concert last week! Thank you for being flexible as we changed the flow of the concert.

We have a few things left on our band calendar to wrap up this school year.
1. School-owned instrument turn-in
Students with a school-owned instrument that stays at home need to turn those in to the BOLES BAND HALL on Wednesday (5/28) or Thursday (5/29). All of our elementary instrument inventory is being transferred to Boles. You can either come during the school day or after school. We will be at school from 8:15 - 4:30 those days. We will continue to play on school-owned instruments that stay in the band hall until the end of the year.
2. School-owned instrument repair
As instruments are turned in, we will assess the condition of the instrument and determine if any repairs need to be made. The district will pay for normal wear and tear issues (such as old pads on woodwind instruments or a chemical cleaning for brass). However, students are responsible or student-inflicted damage (such as dents or broken/bent keys). We will contact you individually about these repairs (hopefully you won't hear from us!!).
3. SPRING PICNIC!!
Our Spring Picnic is next Friday, May 30th from 6:00 - 8:30 PM at Bowman Springs Park (7003 W Poly Webb Road, Arlington, TX 76016). Our boosters will provide hot dogs and paper products, but families attending the picnic need to please contribute the following:
6th graders: 2 liter drink
7th graders: bag of chips
8th graders: dessert
Feel free to bring sporting equipment that you would enjoy playing with, HOWEVER, we will not be using lake or any water toys in any way. :)

Thanks for helping make the end of the school year go smoothly! Please let us know if you have any questions.

Summer Band Camps

One of my favorite parts of being a band student in junior high was going to university-sponsored band camps with my friends. Students can either stay in the college dorm and eat in the college cafeteria for the duration of camp or commute each day. The universities provide full group and small group instruction during the day and activities at night. Each band will present a concert at the end of the camp. They are a fun way to keep playing our instruments over the summer.

Some of the registration deadlines are approaching quickly, so check them out soon!

There are several band camps in the area that are worth checking out:
TCU Band Camp
UTA Band Camp
If you want to travel a little farther ....
Texas Tech Band Camp
Stephen F Austin Band Camp (I attended this one in HS)
University of Houston Band Camp
Sam Houston State University Band Camp

There are also some instrument-specific opportunities to explore:
Floot Fire
Bocal Majority & Operation OBOE
TCU Summer Clarinet Workshop
Low Brass Camp (Heavy Metal) (New 5/30)

Charms Recording Studio

We are beginning to utilize Charms Music Office to help with UIL music pass offs. Symphonic Band students can make up pass offs that they have attempted in sectionals. Concert Band students have a Spring Break challenge.

The Charms Recording Studio is easy to use once it is set up correctly. It can be used on a computer OR using the Charms app on a smart phone. Below are three PDF documents to help you get started.

Symphonic Band UIL Resources

Symphonic Band's UIL performance will be on Friday, April 11 at the Mansfield PAC (west of 287 & Debbie Lane). UIL is like the Band STAAR test, so preparation for this performance is the most important part of our year. It is vital that all Symphonic Band students remain eligible for this contest and are able to perform. Performing at UIL is a prerequisite to going to our spring band contest at NRH2O (date TBA, but will likely be on a school day).

We will have weekly sectionals through UIL. Here is the sectional schedule. Please do your best to schedule appointments around this schedule.

Please be smart about orthodontia this semester. It is very frustrating for students to work hard on perfecting music for months, only to get braces or some other new apparatus a week or two before our most important contest of the year. The best plan is to wait until the the beginning of summer break. I realize that this isn't always possible, but please be cognizant of band events when scheduling anything with the orthodontist.

I have TENTATIVELY chosen three pieces for us to play for this contest. I have played recordings of them in class, and the links to the recordings are below.

Hosts of Freedom by King/Glover
Allegretto from Symphony No. 2 by Beethoven/Longfield
La Madre de los Gatos by Beck

7th & 8th Grade Spring Events Calendar

CLICK HERE FOR THE SPRING SEMESTER EVENTS CALENDAR

One date is still TBA. I am waiting to be assigned a date from the NRH2O Band Contest. As soon as our date is confirmed I will let you know.

Students and parents are responsible for the dates listed on the calendar. Any conflicts (ESPECIALLY WITH Pre-UIL OR UIL) need to be communicated to the directors ASAP.
